Gregor Meyer initially taught himself to play the organ on the Kreutzbach organ in his hometown of Johanngeorgenstadt. As a pupil at the Clara-Wieck Gymnasium in Zwickau, he received his first organ lessons from cantor Matthias Pfund. He later studied church music in Leipzig with Arvid Gast, Holm Vogel, David Timm, Martin Schmeding, and choral conducting with Roland Börger and Morten Schuldt-Jensen. He also received vital artistic impulses through regular contact with the former Gewandhaus organist Matthias Eisenberg.

As director of the GewandhausChor, he has worked closely with the different Gewandhauskapellmeister since 2007 and regularly with renowned guest conductors. For individual projects, he is a regular guest with other well-known choirs, most recently the Leipzig Opera Choir and the RIAS Chamber Choir. He also collaborates closely with the camerata lipsiensis orchestra, which specializes in historically informed performance practice.

As director of the GewandhausChor, Meyer is responsible for programming the ensemble’s concert series, for which he regularly develops innovative programs that often transcend the boundaries of the classical concert repertoire and format. He also appears frequently as a composer and arranger. Recently, his version of Schubert’s Winterreise for baritone, choir, and piano or two accordions was received with great acclaim.

Before his engagement at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, Meyer worked as a choral conductor with ensembles of different sizes and orientations. From 1999 to 2017, he led the Vocalconsort Leipzig, which he founded. In 2011, he launched the soloist ensemble Opella Musica, with which he completed a major project in 2022, the recording of Johann Kuhnau’s complete surviving cantatas . Since 2014, he has also increasingly devoted himself to Johann Rosenmüller’s repertoire with Ensemble 1684.
