Gregor Meyer

Artist photo of Gregor Meyer - Director

Gregor Meyer studied choral conducting and church music in Leipzig, where he also received piano lessons with Mathilde Erben. As director of the Gewandhaus Choir, he has worked closely with the different Gewandhaus conductors since 2007 as well as regularly with renowned guest conductors. For individual projects, he is a regular guest with other well-known choirs, most recently the Leipzig Opera Choir and the RIAS Chamber Choir. He also collaborates closely with the historically-oriented camerata lipsiensis orchestra.

As director of the Gewandhaus Choir, Meyer is responsible for the programming of the ensemble’s concert series, for which he regularly develops innovative programs that often transcend the boundaries of the classical concert repertoire and format. He also appears frequently as a composer and arranger. Recently, his version of Schubert’s Winterreise for baritone, choir, and piano or two accordions was a great success.

Before he began his engagement at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Meyer worked as a choral conductor with ensembles of different sizes and orientations. From 1999 to 2017 he led the Vocalconsort Leipzig, which he founded, and in 2011 he launched the soloist ensemble Opella Musica, with which he completed a major project in 2022, the recording of Johann Kuhnau’s complete surviving cantatas. Since 2014, he has also increasingly devoted himself to the repertoire of Johann Rosenmüller with the Ensemble 1684.

He is also a frequent guest for individual projects with other renowned choirs, most recently with the Choir of the Leipzig Opera and the RIAS Chamber Choir. He also works closely with the orchestra camerata lipsiensis, which specializes in historical performance practice.

In addition to a busy concert schedule at home and abroad, numerous radio and CD productions attest to his artistic output. In 2022, for example, a complete recording of Johann Kuhnau’s cantatas was completed, and a version of Gustav Mahler’s 2nd Symphony for two pianos, solos, trumpet and choir was produced, in which Gregor Meyer took over one of the piano parts.

Equally at home on the conductor’s podium and at the keyboard instrument, Meyer conducts many of his concert and recording projects from the continuo organ.

For the GENIUN CD Auferstehung - Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Gregor Meyer was the pianist and also responsible for the choral preparation.

For the GENUIN CDs Sigfrid Karg-Elert: Das geistliche Chorwerk and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Jugendwerke Gregor Meyer acted as choir director.
