François Bastian (*1987 in Forbach, France) received his first horn and percussion lessons at the age of five. From 2003 he studied in Mannheim and Frankfurt am Main, and in 2005 he began his studies at the Hanns Eisler University of Music Berlin. He has been second horn player with the BRSO since 2009, and a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra since 2015. Bastian regularly performs with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian State Orchestra, and the brass ensemble German Brass. Since 2020 he has been Professor of Horn at the University of Music Saar.

Norbert Dausacker (*1965 in Saarbrücken) completed his horn studies with Martin Oheim at the University of Music Saar and with Erich Penzel at the Cologne University of Music. He has been performing with the BRSO since 1986. He appears with numerous chamber ensembles, including the German Wind Soloists, the Linos Ensemble, and the Wind Soloists of the BRSO. He has been a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra since 1993.

Carsten Carey Duffin first began playing horn as a six-year-old. He studied in Stuttgart and played with, among other symphonies, the Konzerthausorcherster Berlin and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Duffin is the principal horn player of the BRSO and a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and NoPhilBrass ensemble. He also performs as a soloist, for example with the Bochumer Symphoniker and the BRSO. He is a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.

Thomas Ruh (*1972 in Tübingen) received his first horn lessons in 1981. In 1992 he began his studies with Erich Penzel at the Cologne University of Music. Ruh has performed numerous concerts as a soloist, including with the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1995–96 he was 3rd principal horn player and then principal horn player with the Essen Philharmonic, until being appointed principal horn player with the Hanover State Symphony Orchestra in 1997. He has been a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra since the summer of 1999 and of the BRSO since 2005.

Jaka Stadler (*1983 in Ljubljana, Slovenia) studied cello with Ciril Škerjanec and Wen-Sinn Yang at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. He has been a prizewinner of various competitions, and sonata recitals have taken him throughout Europe and the USA. In 2005 he received the honorary award of the European Cultural Foundation in Vienna. Stadler has been a member of the Bavarian State Orchestra and the Bamberg Symphony. From 2008 to 2010 he was principal cellist with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, and since 2010 has been cellist with the BRSO.


Alumni

Rainer Seidel (*1954 in Plauen) studied with Karl Kolbinger in Munich and was a member of the BRSO from 1977 to 2020. Awarded many prizes at national and international competitions, the bassoonist has made numerous solo appearances with the Bach Collegium Munich and the soloists of the BRSO. Seidel harbors a special affection for the Fagottissimo Munich ensemble, of which he has been a member since 1986. He also works as a sound engineer and recording producer.
