Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim

The hallmarks of the South-west German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim are its fresh and gripping musical approach and broad-ranging repertoire extending from early to contemporary music. With fourteen musicians from seven different countries, the ensemble is one of Europe’s few full-time chamber orchestras, allowing an exceptionally rich and versatile sound to be cultivated. The ensemble was founded in 1950 by Friedrich Tilegant, a former student of Paul Hindemith, and quickly won international recognition: the renowned “Tilegant sound” could be heard not only at the Salzburg, Lucerne and Leipzig festivals and on international concert tours, but also on numerous recordings as well. After the untimely death of its founder in 1968, the chamber orchestra was most influenced by the Viennese Paul Angerer and Vladislav Czarnecki, a conductor steeped in the great Czech tradition. Sebastian Tewinkel, winner of First Prizes at several conducting competitions, was Artistic Director of the ensemble from 2002–2013. In addition to many productions for radio stations, the South-west German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim has been featured in nearly 250 recordings. The chamber orchestra performs with soloists such as Nigel Kennedy, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Cyprien Katsaris and Sabine Meyer and in recent years has given concerts through-out Europe (Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Schwetzingen Festival, Prague Spring and Prague Autumn, the Flanders Festival, the Festival Euro Mediterraneo in Rome, the Vienna OsterKlang Festival) and in the US and Japan.
