I TEMPI, Chamber Orchestra
I TEMPI was founded in Basel in 2013 by conductor Gevorg Gharabekyan and a group of young passionate professional musicians. Together they have abandoned the now traditional distinction between “Baroque” and “modern” orchestras and play all of their repertoire on authentic period instruments in order to be able to offer audiences innovative programming featuring a broad range of styles. I TEMPI even switch instruments during concerts, contrasting the various worlds of sound in works from different style periods. The ensemble attaches great importance to historically informed performance practice. I TEMPI display a willingness to experiment, an active exchange of ideas among ensemble members and a finely differentiated approach to the works they perform.
The name I TEMPI means “the times” in Italian and reflects the group’s desire to come as close as possible to the specific musical language of the historical period for a given work, thus making it possible to experience the timeless and expressive power of the music while creating a link to the present. The performance of the works of contemporary composers and forgotten masterpieces are also important goals of I TEMPI.
