Daniel Haefliger has studied with a number of renowned cellists such as Pierre Fournier and André Navarra. He is an extremely versatile musician. As a soloist, he has performed at notable concert series and festivals in Lucerne, Paris, Tokyo, Newcastle and Vienna under the baton of Thierry Fischer, Pascal Rophé, Peter Eötvös and Magnus Lindberg, to name just a few. A dedicated chamber music player, he has initiated a number of innovative projects and performed in the most prestigious concert halls of Europe with partners such as Thomas Zehetmair, Heinz Holliger, Dénes Várion and Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Daniel Haefliger has worked in close association with some of the leading composers of our time, including György Kurtág, Heinz Holliger, Brian Ferneyhough, Harrison Birtwistle and György Ligeti, premiering literally hundreds of works, some of them dedicated to him. He held the position of solo cellist at the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt and at the Camerata Bern, was one of the founders of the musicological magazine Contrechamps in Geneva and served as solo cellist for the chamber music group of the same name until 2009. Around the turn of the millennium, he co-founded the Swiss Chamber Concerts, the largest Swiss chamber music series with regular concerts in Geneva, Zurich, Basel and Lugano, acting as artistic co-director to this day. Numerous radio and CD recordings, released on labels such as Forlane, Stradivarius, Claves, NEOS and ECM, attest to the wide scope of the artist’s activities.Deeply committed to education, Daniel Haefliger teaches a chamber music class at the HEM in Lausanne, as well as a cello class in Geneva. He plays on a cello by Giovanni Grancino, built in Milan in 1695.
