Sharon Carty, mezzo-soprano
Irish mezzosoprano Sharon Carty studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the University for Music and performing Arts, Vienna and was a member of the opera studio at Frankfurt opera house from 2010-2012. While in the opera studio programme, she sang roles such as Tebaldo (Don Carlo), Second Lady (Magic Flute), Cleone (Medee), Bastien (Bastien et Bastienne), Flora (La Traviata), Aloés (L’Etoile). She returned to Frankfurt as a guest artist in the 2012/2013 season to reprise her role as Aloés in L’Etoile, and recently undertook the principal role in Dido and Aeneas there, to critical acclaim.
To date, guest engagements have brought her to Teatro Manoel, Lyric Opera Productions Dublin, Anna Livia international opera festival, English National Opera, Garsington Opera and the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, where she performed roles such as Ruggiero (Alcina), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Sesto (Giulio Cesare).
Sharon Carty also enjoys a busy concert schedule and has worked with orchestras such as the Wiener Akademie, Capella Istrapolitana, European Union Chamber Orchestra, Capella Leopoldiana, Camerata Ireland, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Irish Baroque Orchestra Camerata Ireland with conductors such as Martin Haselböck, Barry Douglas, Fergus Sheil, Henrik Nanasi, Derek Gleeson, Christoph Wolff, Carlo Franci, Konrad Junghänel, Karl Jenkins und Andrea Marcon.
A Music Network-funded recording of English and Irish songs and duets by Benjamin Britten and other English composers is due for release in early 2014 on the GENUIN label, with mezzosoprano Alison Browner and pianist Andreas Frese. January 2014 sees her create the role of Oscar in the world premiere of Fabrice Bollon’s “Oscar und die Dame in Rosa” at Theater Freiburg. Further highlights of the 2013/2014 season include Messiah with the Irish Baroque Orchestra and at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre as well as John Adam’s Nixon in China with Wide Open Opera.
